TRAVEL DIARY: DRIES VAN NOTEN EXHIBITION AT OLD LYRIC SHANGHAI

Visiting Old Lyric was one of my top priorities during my Shanghai escapade last September. And coincidentally, at that time, there was a Dries Van Noten exhibition happening at their space. Being a big fan of the acclaimed Belgian designer, my excitement literally went over the roof. Last summer, I had the opportunity to experience his well-curated exhibition at Musée des Arts Décoratif in Paris. It was, in my opinion, one of the best fashion exhibitions I have seen on par with the Margiela 20th Anniversary at Sommerset House in London and the YSL exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

The exhibition, entitled The Garden of Early Romance, showcased an array of pieces from Dries Van Noten archive collection handpicked by Old Lyric owner Zephy Lu. Everything on display was available for purchase. It is amazing how most items from the exhibition still looked very much "on trend' considering a majority of the pieces came from Van Noten's earlier collections. From the vivid prints to the exquisite embroidery, the craftsmanship of Dries Van Noten pieces is unquestionably unparalleled. No wonder he is still one of the most sought after designers after more than two decades already. And even after all the hype and burgeoning success, the brand still remains a private company. Aside from the good selection of archival pieces from Dries Van Noten, there were also lookbooks and show invites on display. Fortunately, most of the pieces I like were already sold. So I left with my pockets intact and my wallet happy.

For the record, Old Lyric specializes on luxury designer vintage fashion from acclaimed Japanese designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo as well as Belgian designers like Dries Van Noten, Maison Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester to name a few.

Special shout-out to Old Lyric's Creative Director and Co-Founder Kian Zhang for inviting me to the exhibition. Indeed, my Old Lyric experience was one of the highlights of my trip. Hopefully, when I return to Shanghai, there will be more exciting pieces for me to covet.
