Before coming to Tokyo, I was not familiar with 99%IS at all. Among all the shows I saw in Tokyo last October, 99%IS probably had the most interesting crowd. I like the wide spectrum of styles that was present that evening. Without a doubt normcore was a minority off the runway. After examining (fashion-checking) the crowd, I sort of had an idea of what to expect. And thankfully, 99%IS did not disappoint.
Korean designer Bajowoo's fascination with the alternative punk scene started after seeing a punk show in school. In his second year at Esmod Tokyo, he launched 99%IS to translate his vision into clothing. Since then, he has been upgrading punk style staples such as biker jackets, vests, leather pants into fashion-forward must-haves by adding adornment such as studs, safety pins and spikes.
